Szabo graduated in 1975 from the Hungarian Film Academy where he studied under George Illes. 
Illes taught cinematographers such as Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC ("Scarecrow", "Deer-Hunter", "Close Encounters of the Third Kind") and Laszlo Kovacs, ASC ("Easy Riders", "Ghostbusters").
Gabor Szabo later worked as a professor of cinematography at the Hungarian Film Academy for 30 years.  Currently, he is involved in the establishment of a new form of film education at the Budapest College of Communication and Business (BKF).  Meeting a need in film study materials, Szabo wrote a book about film-language.  He also hosted a Hungarian television program about the basics of photography and filmmaking.

Szabo was the cinematographer for the movie, "The Revolt of Job", which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1984. His movie “Meteo” that he shot with András Monori-Mész played in the movie theatres for years, and was considered a cult movie in Hungary.
Vilmos Zsigmond, Oscar-winning cinematographer, chose Szabo as his DOP when making his own directorial debut, “The Long Shadow”, with Liv Ulmann and Michael York. Szabo also worked on numerous films with Dutch director Rudolph van den Berg. Their latest work, “Tirza”, was the Dutch candidate for the best foreign language Academy Award in 2011.

Szabo's work on commercials as a cinematographer, and often also as a director, has earned him a considerable reputation across Europe. Most of his foreign commercials were shot with René van den Berg, Dutch director. As is common in Europe, Szabo is not only the Director of Photography,
but also the camera operator for his films.

As Director of Photography working with several well-known directors, Szabo has made more than 30 feature films, numerous documentaries, live-music concerts, and many commercials.
Films that Gabor Szabo has worked on, have won over fifty awards at international film festivals.

Gabor Szabo is also one of the founders of HSC (The Hungarian Society of Cinematographers) and currently serves on its Board.

1975-ben diplomázott a Színház- és Filmművészeti Főiskolán Illés György tanítványaként, aki

többek közt Zsigmond Vilmos, ASC és Kovács László, ASC tanára is volt. Szabó később ugyanitt

tanított operatőri mesterséget 30 éven át. Napjainkban egy új filmes képzés megalapításában vesz

részt szakvezetőként egy másik egyetemen: a BKF-en. Tanárként könyvet írt a filmnyelvről, és

műsorvezető-szakértője volt egy a fotózás és filmkészítés alapjairól szóló televíziós sorozatnak.

Operatőre volt a “Jób lázadása” c. filmnek, melyet Oscar-díjra jelöltek a legjobb idegennyelvű film

kategóriában 1984-ben. Monori-Mész Andrással készített filmje, a Meteo a rendszerváltás után évekig

szerepelt a mozik műsorán, és a 90-es évek kultuszfilmje lett.

Liv Ullmann és Michael York főszereplésével, őt választotta operatőréül.

Számos filmet forgatott Rudolf van den Berg holland rendezővel.

Legutóbbi közös filmjük, a “Tirza” volt Hollandia kiválasztott versenyfilmje a 2011-es Oscar-ra.

A világ számos pontján forgatott reklámfilmet operatőrként, Magyarországon rendezőként is. Legtöbb

külföldi reklámfilmjét egy másik Van Den Berg nevű holland rendezővel, Renével forgatta.

Operatőrként több, mint 30 játékfilmet, számos dokumentum-, zenei és koncertfilmet, reklámfilmet forgatott.
Az általa fotózott filmek több, mint 50 díjat nyertek nemzetközi fesztiválokon.
